What you need to think about when preparing for your holiday

No matter what your destination may be, there is always a lot to organise when preparing for a holiday. One sure-fire way to make certain important details are not forgotten is to make a list of what needs to be done well in advance of your departure date, crossing off each chore as it is accomplished. Below are a few of the most important things you will need to keep in mind when getting ready for your holiday.

To start with, organise all your paperwork. If you are going abroad, dig out everyone's passport and make sure they are all valid for the dates you will be travelling. Some countries request a period of validity (often six months) after the end date of your visit, so make certain this is complied with. You may also need a visa to enter your destination; many countries will allow you to obtain a visa online these days, or you can use a travel management specialist to help with this aspect of your trip.

Make certain that you have copies of all relevant documentation such as visas, hotel and flight bookings, and travel insurance policies. Also make certain not to forget your guidebooks and language dictionaries! It is worth making a photocopy of everyone's passport as well, so you have all the relevant details should the worst happen and one goes astray whilst you are away. Keep an itinerary of all your travel plans handy with the dates, times, and departure and arrival locations listed.

It is worth planning ahead for expenditures whilst on holiday. Even if you are off to an all-inclusive resort, there are likely to be expenses - gifts, souvenirs, and entry charges for attractions - that will require extra funds. If you plan to use a credit card abroad, it is worth giving your provider a call to tell them you will be travelling; you don't want the card stopped for a potential fraud check. If you prefer using a pre-paid card on holiday, make certain you apply for the card well in advance of your break so it arrives on time. Getting some local currency before you leave is also an excellent idea, in case local cash points are hard to find.

Packing will go much easier if you don't do it in a panic at the last minute. A few days before you leave, start making a pile of things to take such as sun block, hats, books, cameras, etc. - and get the rest of the family to help with the things they can't live without. Dig out suitcases and make sure the zips or locks still work properly. Think about what clothes you really want to take, and make sure they are all clean. If you have younger children, you will want to check that their holiday clothing and footwear still fits.

Make sure all the electronic gadgets you want to take are fully charged or have new batteries, and take a charging lead or spare batteries with you. If going abroad, make sure you have a plug adaptor.

Finally, take a deep breath and think about getting yourself ready for your break. Do you need a holiday haircut? If it is a beach holiday, do you need a pedicure? If you are relaxed and ready for your holiday, you will enjoy it all the more!
