Hiring a Gardener -

Top tips and advice

Gardening resources

If you don't have time to manage your garden, you can hire a gardener to transform your garden, or just hire someone for the basic upkeep.

Points to consider:

Do you need help on a regular or occasional basis?

Ask friends and neighbours for recommendations. A good port of call is your local garden nursery.

Always tell a gardener how you want the garden treated. This has to be made clear. An example would be that the weeds should be done by hand and not with the use of weedkiller.

A weekly service can be a good idea in the growing season, especially for just mowing the lawn and the cleaning up of debris. Some other tasks are seasonal like pruning, planting bulbs, fertilising etc. Separate estimates should be obtained for this.

Ensure your garrdener matches your style. E.g. Don't hire someone who tries to turn your whole garden into a show piece if you really only want a natural look.

Always decide if you are buying the plants to be put in or not?

If you get a good gardener it is always wise to remember their birthdays or any other general special occasions where you can reward them with a small gift.

Always be very wary of garden businesses that stop by your house and tell you what problems your garden has and how they can mend them!

Try to maintain a good dialogue with your gardener and check on what they are actually doing fairly regularly.

Never be afraid to speak your mind. if you are not happy with something, make sure they are aware straight away. The trick is to be firm but warm.
