Unfortunately, as you reach a mature age, there are some health issues that you can expect to appear. However, the good news is that you can prevent many of these becoming a real problem by taking simple steps to improve your health.

 

Health problems that you should pay attention to

 

Health problems can affect even the healthiest of people approaching old age, and symptoms
should never be ignored.

 


Some health problems may be serious, such as mental deterioration, for example dementia, depression, and mood swings. These problems can just appear themselves, or they can be caused by other conditions, for example you may become depressed due to the worry of another health problem you are experiencing.

 


Other health problems may be physical in nature, for example mobility problems caused by conditions such as arthritis or osteoporosis; impotence, anaemia and cancer. Women may experience health problems as a result of the menopause. Heart disease is very common, and claims more lives each year than any other disease. It can be caused by many factors, including your genetic predisposition, excess stress and high cholesterol.

 


High cholesterol

 


High cholesterol doesn't cause any apparent symptoms, however, it can lead to serious health problems such as narrowed arteries, mini-strokes, full strokes, and heart attacks. Therefore reducing the level of cholesterol in your body can have a very positive effect.

 


Eating healthily and taking regular exercise can achieve lowered cholesterol levels. These steps will also help to keep your cardiovascular system healthy, to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Diets should be low in fat and rich in wholegrain, fruit and vegetables.

 


In addition, there are some medications that can be taken to reduce the risk of heart attacks. For example, statins have been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks in healthy people by up to one third. Statins reduce cholesterol, and also have other health benefits - in fact, they also help to reduce the risk of strokes, and studies have shown that they reduce the risk of death from any cause by twelve per cent. It has been suggested that statins should be taken every day by anyone over 50 years of age.

 


Vitamins

 


Taking vitamins can help to prevent a variety of different health issues and may also slow down ageing. It is an easy way to reduce your risk of contracting a wide range of different health issues, without having to take drastic action. It is beneficial to take a good quality multivitamin, which will include sufficient amounts of a number of vitamins such as Vitamin B6, which helps to prevent depression, colon cancer, clotting abnormalities and kidney stones; and folic acid, which is needed in the creation of DNA, and reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer and age-related macular degeneration.

 


Iron can help to reduce the risk of anaemia, and there are various supplements such as cod liver oil, that can be taken to lubricate joints and reduce joint problems such as arthritis. Of course, all of these vitamins are best taken as early as possible to help prevent diseases before they start, but they can still be very effective in controlling symptoms once a disease has developed.
